Csak a szél Year: 2012 Country: Hungary, Germany, France Actors and Actresses: Lajos Sárkány Review: News quickly spreads of the murder of a Romany family in a Hungarian village. The perpetrators have escaped and nobody claims to know who might have committed the crime. For another Romany family living close by, the murder only serves to confirm their latent, carefully repressed fears. Far away in Canada the head of the family decides that his wife, children and their grandfather must join him as soon as possible. Living in fear of the racist terror that surrounds them and feeling abandoned by the silent majority, the family tries to get through the day after the attack. By nightfall when darkness descends on the village the family pushes the beds closer together than usual. Yet their hope of escaping the madness proves illusory. Based on an actual series of killings in Hungary that claimed the lives of eight people in less than a year, Bence Fliegauf portrays the pogrom-like atmosphere which breeds such violence. The camera stays hot on the heels of the protagonists, making the breathless escalation of events physically palpable. - IMDb Movie added at: 30.04.2022 |

Elysium Year: 1986 Country: Hungary Actors and Actresses: Zoltán Nagy Review: This jarring wartime drama set in Budapest is adapted from a novel of the same name by Imre Keszi which was, in turn, based on a true story. At center stage is a Jewish family permitted to continue living in their apartment during the war so long as they identify themselves as Jews when they are out on the street (by wearing the yellow star). One day their son is picked up and sent to a deportation camp for children. The camp, the Elysium, appears deceptively civilized because of the cultural interests of its personnel -- except that the children are being used for medical experiments. The distraught parents soon discover that their "friends" are afraid to help them, that they are not really considered to be Hungarians, and that all their learning cannot move the mountains that block access to their son. - Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide Movie added at: 27.04.2022 |

A Pin for the Butterfly Year: 1994 Country: United Kingdom, Czech Republic Actors and Actresses: Florence Hoath Review: This complex political drama zeroes in on the life of a small bourgeois family living in Stalinist Czechoslovakia. It is set in the 50's. The family is falling apart from the pressure to think along party lines, even in private. The mere mention of the West could result in prison, or worse. Little Marushka is a normal, imaginative young girl who is not easily repressed. Her ways are not appreciated by her grandparents and her mother who possesses neither trait. Marushka's mother, an aspiring actress in the local socialist-realist theater, spends most of her time cozying up to local Communist leaders. She is too busy for her daughter which leaves the girl to be raised by her uncle and her grandparents. Marushka's uncle does not fully embrace Communist thinking. He values independence and free thinking. This gets the family in terrible trouble with the ever-present authorities. - Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide Movie added at: 16.04.2022 |
