 NianchanYear: 1959 Country: Japan Tags: boy skinny dip, girl skinny dip Review: Director Shohei Imamura is one of the better-known names of Japanese cinema and here he helms a consistently downbeat drama of miserable lives in a miserable little mining town. Four orphaned siblings struggle against the crushing poverty that threatens to separate them. Unfortunately, no one else in the town is in very good economic shape either. Even though the children receive all the sympathy they need and kind offers of whatever food the townspeople have available, it slowly becomes apparent that their efforts to stay together are woefully unrealistic in the face of economic pressures. They retreat to safety in Northern Japan to stay with Taro's grandmother (Hiromi Nakahara) & two aunties (Meiko Kaji as Futae & Aiko Mimasu as Miyo) who run a bean-curd tofu company while men are off to war. His grandmother tells him never to go in the barn, because it is haunted, so of course he checks it out & discovers Emi, Aunt Futae's hidden daughter. As her father was the enemy, Emi is at risk of being taken away by the authorities, so the women protect her & hide her existence, never having registered her birth so that she does not legally exist. Taro deeply hates the enemy due to his susceptibility to the xenophobic tone of the era & having been taught that whoever does not hate Americans cannot love Japan, & who can blame anyone at a time when Tokyo was being burned down from one end to the other in an intentional policy of "kill as many civillians as possible!" There, the lass learns of a plot against the king and escapes with some other girls in an attempt to warn him. While in route, the land's prince is encountered; he falls in love with our young heroine but must learn to accept that she is also fond of another male peer. A unique, interesting adventure/fantasy made in East Germany shortly before the end of the Communist regime. "Rattenzuhausbeiuns," by the way, is translated "Rats-at-home-by-us." But gradually he begins to feel at home with them, and advances to a full-fledged member of his new community. As the regular white settlers are attacked, he feels more associated with the Indians than with his former people. After the victory of the English over the French in 1763, all of the captured white settlers are to be exchanged for the captured Indians, including George/Blue Bird.
